In Ayurveda, the process of cleaning the nasal passages is called neti. In this video, Dr. Marc Halpern will walk you through the process of using a neti pot.
A neti pot is used for cleansing the nasal passages and sinuses. A neti pot is a small pot that looks like a toy teapot. The tip of the pot's spout is placed in one nostril as the pot is tipped. The solution enters the nasal passage and flows in one nostril and out the other. For this technique to be successful, it is important to keep the mouth open. Bend forward over a sink, and then turn the head a bit to one s side. The solution used for general maintenance is salt water. The amount of salt added to water can vary. The proper quantity is the amount that does not cause burning of the nasal membranes. Begin with 1/4 tsp. of salt per half cup of water. The solution should also be at body temperature or only slightly warmer to be comfortable. Following neti, the nasal passages should be properly oiled with constitutionally appropriate oil to avoid dryness. Oil is placed on the little finger and the inside of the nostrils are lightly coated. This procedure ensures healthy nasal passages and proper absorption of prana. The practice of neti clears the mind and reduces respiratory allergies. When greater problems exist in the nasal passages or sinuses, medicinal teas can be used and neti can be performed two or three times per day.
Tips for Using a Neti:
1. Relax and breathe through your mouth for a bit before doing this the first time.
2. Always keep your mouth open while doing the practice.
3. Check the water temperature with your fingertip.
4. If you feel a burning sensation in your nasal passages, adjust the amount of salt or water temperature.
4. Purified water is always the safest to use.
Once you get used to the process it's actually very easy and it's a wonderful way to start your day. It only takes a few minutes.
